SUMMARY:Orchard Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Assuming all the season’s tree planting is done\, we’ll be starting on pruning\, adjusting tree guards to fit the growing trees\, and where needed\, weeding immediately around each tree. We’ll work our way along the tree rows\, and can surely find a task for every level of skill and energy. \nGeneral info for work parties\nEveryone is welcome – no experience necessary. Please come and join for as long or as little as you like\, and take it at any pace that works for you. Kids are welcome\, but you must take full responsibility for any children you bring with you. \nDo wrap up warm (or bring sun cream and a hat)\, bring snacks and drinks if you think you’ll need them\, and bear in mind that the orchard site is pretty exposed. I’ll do my best to provide some flapjacks to keep us fuelled up. \nWe generally have all the tools we need on site\, but if you would like to work with your favourite spade or secateurs\, please bring them along. \nIt’s helpful if you can text or email to let me know you’re coming so I have a rough idea of numbers. If you need directions\, have any questions\, or want to check we’re there on the day if the weather is dodgy\, please do get in touch.

SUMMARY:Felt-Making with Andy Evans - Sunday Craft in the Barn
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll embrace the warmth of wool and discover light amidst the dark winter months. Starting with a 2D picture where we play with colour\, then we’ll progress to creating 3D lanterns illuminated by fairy lights or candles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndy Evans is a mum of two who has always had a passion for textiles\, starting as an avid screen printer. When her daughter was around two\, she began making her dresses and gilets from wool and fabric\, which deepened her love for creating her own fabrics using multiple mediums\, especially wool through wet felting. She finds joy in combining function and beauty; working with the vibrant array of wool colors is deeply fulfilling.

SUMMARY:Bee Observation Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Starting 3rd Feb we will be commencing a series of monthly workshops designed by our resident apiarist Christian Gruetzmacher who has 18 years experience in holistic bee keeping. He facilitates individuals and groups in developing their own genuine relationship to the insect world and honey bees. \nDuring these 6 initial sessions we will cover wholistic bee biology\, allowing us to understand honey bee colonies as a whole\, their connection with the rest of the environment as well as their yearly cycles and internal organisation. \nWe will look at 25\,000 years of documented apiculture and the spiritual\, cultural and practical traditions of how people around the world relate to the honey bee. \nComparing the various modern conventional and alternative hive designs in relation to our local environment and our individual aims participants will be enabled to make an informed choice about their own way of relating to and working with bees. \nThis course is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. It is open to anyone with an interest with bees whether you are looking for artistic inspiration\, environmental activism\, sustainable bee keeping or simply wanting to learn about bees. \nSuggested donation of £10-£15 per session but please attend for free if finances are a barrier. \nSessions will be held in the Oakbrook Barn Garden room close by our Bee Observatory where we can observe undisturbed honey bee colonies throughout the  season with out any need for protective clothing. \nThe dates are Saturdays 3rd Feb\, 2nd March\, 6th April\, 4th May\, 1st June and 6th July from 2-3pm. \nThose wishing to volunteer practically on our bee garden are welcome to join the earlier volunteering sessions from 11am-2pm on the same dates before joining the workshop.

SUMMARY:Scything workshops
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn the magical art of scything with us! \nEach workshop will cover all the basics\, from getting the scythe set up right\, to sharpening\, mowing and peening. We’ll start with a bit of theory\, and quickly move on to actually using the scythes. \n\nSuitable for total beginners\, as well as those feeling a little rusty or wanting some extra coaching.\n\n\nLed by Kai Lange\, an experienced scythe-master and teacher.\n\n\nSmall group of 5-6 people – plenty of opportunity for one to one support and asking questions.\n\n\nUse our scythes or bring your own.\n\n\nCost is £10 per person – refundable if you come back to volunteer in the orchard with your new found scything skills!\n\n\nEach workshop runs for 3 hours\, including a break for tea and cake. You are very welcome to stay on for a picnic lunch afterwards and\, if you’re inspired\, to continue practicing your new skills in the orchard in the afternoon. \nScythes were traditionally used for haymaking\, with teams of people working in staggered lines to mow a meadow together. These days scythes come into their own for all sorts of jobs. With the right blade and a bit of practice a scythe can be used for cutting grass on banks\, paths\, and even lawns\, cutting back green manure\, tackling nettles and other vigorous weeds\, mulching fruit bushes\, and managing wildflower meadows of any size. They are much quieter than strimmers or mowers\, don’t require any fossil fuels\, and don’t leave microplastics in the grass. \nWe will be working with Austrian scythes. These are lighter and more ergonomic than traditional English scythes\, and are at the heart of the scything renaissance in this country. If you have your own scythe\, of any make\, please do bring it along; it’s best to learn on what you’re going to continue using\, and we can help you get it set up right if needs be. \nWe are grateful to The Tree Council for financial support in running these workshops. \n\nFor more information\, or to book your place:\nemail – oakbrookorchard@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Oakbrook Farm Agroforestry Tour
DESCRIPTION:Find out why we’re planting fruit trees\, hedges\, shelterbelts\, coppices and more on the farm. The tour will focus on Oakbrook Orchard\, but also take in other new plantings across the farm\, including trees planted in the last two years for woodchip\, forage\, basketry and shelter. Learn about the benefits of trees to the cattle\, the vegetables\, the soil and wildlife. Hear about some of the challenges we’ve encountered and see some of the solutions we’re working on. \nThis is a free tour offered as part of the national Agroforestry Open Weekend. Check out the wider event and the other 40-plus farms taking part here. \nEveryone welcome. You’ll need to be able to manage farm tracks\, grassy fields and some steep slopes. Kids are welcome to play in our Haven Field\, with adult supervision. \nPlease book a free place via our eventbrite page here. \nOur friends and neighbours at Good Small Farms\, literally just over the road\, are also taking part in the event and are holding an open day on the same Sunday with food\, kids’ activities\, and a farm tour.

SUMMARY:Oakbrook Orchard Work Party
DESCRIPTION:We will be pruning and weeding the trees\, continuing to work our way along the rows and giving them a bit of tlc before they burst in to leaf and start a new growing season.\n  \nGeneral info for work parties\nEveryone is welcome – no experience necessary. Please come and join for as long or as little as you like\, and take it at any pace that works for you. Kids are welcome\, but you must take full responsibility for any children you bring with you. \nDo wrap up warm\, bring snacks and drinks if you think you’ll need them\, and bear in mind that the orchard site is pretty exposed. \nemail – oakbrookorchard@gmail.com \nphone – Jessie on 07779 232267
